Information on using the Public Library of Magdeburg

 

Welcome to our library!

We would like to give you some basic information on using the library.

Registration and library card

There are two ways of using the library. You can visit us during the opening ours in order to work or to meet friends. This is free of charge.
If you would like to borrow items from our library stock you need to purchase a library card.

In order to become a member of our library you are requested to appear in person and bring the following documents:

- ID card (e.g. passport, residence permit, temporary residence permit)
- Proof of address (certificate of residence, residence permit)
- completed registration form (available online and at our registration desk)

A library card is valid for one year and may be renewed afterwards.

The library card can only be used by you, not by other people.

Please inform us of any change of name and address. In case of card loss please contact the library immediately. A replacement card is issued at additional cost.

The library card for children under the age of 11 years is free of charge.
Adults pay a fee of 10,00 €  for a standard library card.

Pupils and students under the age of 27 years, holders of a dusabled pass and beneficiaries with a Magdeburg pass are entitled to a reduced annual fee of 5,00 €
With this card you can borrow books, magazines and mixed media packages like language courses without additional cost.
Borrowing a musical CD, DVD, Blu-Ray or an audiobook comes with an additional fee of 1,00 € per item.
 

With an extended library card ("golden card") you can borrow all types of media without additional costs. This card is priced at 25,00 € p.a.

 

 

Home loan

You borrow and return books and other media at our circulation desks.

Borrowing items:
You need a library card to borrow books and other media from the library. When borrowing an item you wil receive a receipt with the return date. Please mind that date to avoid overdue charges.

 

Loan periods:
The loan periods vary for different types of media. Here is an overview of our loan periods and possible renewals

Returning items

Please return your library items by their due date to avoid overdue charges. If you return an item after its due date, you will be charged a fee of 0,30 € per day.

Your items can be returned by other people if you are not able to come by yourself.

You can return items to any of our branches regardless of where you have borrowed them.

 

Damaged items

If you accidentally damage or lose an item you will have to replace it and you will be charged an additional processing fee of 5,00 €.

 

International Library

On the 3rd floor of the main library we have established our Intercultural Library.

In the "International Library" section you can find dictionaries, language courses and literature in in various languages (e.g. English, French, Russian, Arabic ...).
Furthermore you can find books and materials to learn German.

 

Internet access

We provide free WLAN internet access via the "Otto-Hotspot".

On the 4th floor you can use one of the internet workstations to surf the www.
This comes with a fee of 0,50 € per 30 minutes.
If you don't have a library card, we need you to pay an additional fee of 2,00 €.

 

House Rules

  • Please store your bag and your jacket in one of our lockers.

  • The library is not responsible for the loss of property you brought in with you. Please do not leave valuables unattended at any time.

  • Please show consideration for others who want to read or study in silence

  • Please note that the reading café on the ground floor is the only place in the library where you are allowed to eat and drink.

  • The usage of mobile phones is not permitted inside the library rooms
    Please use your mobile phone only in our reading café or outside the building.
